The Little Library

Prasot village in Cambodia's far eastern Svay Rieng province is the site of our children's reading room, The Little Library.

The subsistence farmers here have been turning their rice fields with handmade wooden plows and water buffalo for many hundreds of years.

The villages in this area probably look almost the same as they did in the time of the great Angkorian reign beginning in the 11th century.

We are currently working hard to get everything set up to open in January 2015. This means our team stays in the village (sleeping on the floor of the library for now) which is a great way to learn about Khmer village life.

We are so excited to finish up here and start doing some art and literacy activities with the children!

The past week has been a whirlwind of shopping trips at the markets and building, scrubbing, organizing, and planning for The Little Library.

Tuk Tuk loaded with friends and supplies!
We spent the last few days preparing to leave for the village to set up our children's library. Our wonderful friends, Sambo, Nin, and Sarat helped us negotiate the bustling streets and markets of Phnom Penh to find the best prices on art, school, and office supplies.

Sambo and Chris browse Khmer to English dictionaries and English Language Learner Dictionaries.

We found some great deals on supplies here, for example, a box of 144 pencils costs just $5USD

For $20USD, fifty five young students will each be gifted a new composition book.

With everything packed into the taxi, Chris and Nin are ready to go first to the village!
In other exciting news our first volunteer, Koji, just arrived from Seattle. He graciously carried 100 more donated children's books in his suitcase for our library!

Koji will stay until mid 2015 working with The Antipodes Collective on a variety of projects involving teaching art, English, graphic design and video.
